Hope Valley Railway Users’ Group was reconstituted in September 2008 with the aim of improving the Hope Valley service. Our key objective is to increase the frequency of services that stop in the Hope Valley. We are a membership organisation, and currently have more than seventy members, most of whom are regular users of the Hope Valley line.

Our priorities:

  • To improve the timetable on the line. We are campaigning for an hourly stopping service between Manchester and Sheffield
  • To improve the quality of the trains in use on the line, particularly focusing upon the over-crowding on peak-time services
  • To represent the concerns of our members relating to other aspects of the train services to the relevant train companies

After 2 years of diligent work we are delighted to have achieved one of initial priorities which was to fill the evening peak gap. From the end of 2011, anyone wishing to leave Sheffield after 5pm, will now have the option of an hourly service between 17.14 and 19.14. The new 18.14 service from Sheffield, which starts on December 12th 2011, is a major breakthrough. Previously anyone missing the 17.14 faced a two hour gap in service, something which stops many people from using the trains.

This demonstrates that positive changes can happen if enough people put the effort in to find the solution. We will continue to work on the next set of priorities for the Hope Vally line – why not join us?
